Definition of cookies
Cookies are small text files containing a certain amount of information exchanged between a website and the user's terminal (usually the browser), where they are stored to be retransmitted to the same sites the next time the same user visits. They are mainly used for the purpose of making websites function and operate more efficiently, as well as for the purpose of providing information to the owners of the website itself. Cookies can be either session or persistent. Session cookies remain stored in the terminal for a short period of time and are deleted as soon as the user closes the browser. Their use is strictly limited to the transmission of session identifiers (consisting of random numbers generated by the server) necessary to enable secure and efficient exploration of the site. Persistent cookies, on the other hand, remain stored in the user's terminal until a predetermined expiration date. These, since they are not deleted directly when the browser is closed, allow to remember the choices made by the user on its site, as well as to collect information about the pages of the site visited by the user, the frequency with which the site is visited and to identify the navigation path of users, in order to improve the experience on this site. In the course of browsing a site, the user may receive on his or her terminal “first-party” cookies, when they are managed directly by the owner and/or operator of the site, and also cookies that are sent from different sites or web servers (so-called “third-party” cookies); this happens because on the website visited there may be elements that reside on servers other than the one on which the website is located. In other words, they are those cookies that are set by a website other than the one you are currently visiting.
Cookies can be distinguished into three different types:
- Technical cookies: used for the sole purpose of enabling the site to function properly;
- Analytical cookies: used to collect aggregate information of a mainly statistical nature;
- Profiling cookies: aimed at creating profiles related to the user and used to send advertising messages in line with the preferences expressed by the same in the context of web browsing.
